Rihanna, illScarlett, Hedley and Girlicious headline the top pop acts and presenters at the 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards. “It could be one of the most memorable shows,” says one insider.

The 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards is taking it to the streets, bringing chart-topping acts and showbiz glitterati to Toronto for the 19th annual extravaganza.

Rihanna, Simple Plan, Sean Kingston and Hedley are among the international and Canadian acts that will fire up the red carpet and live telecast on Sunday, June 15 at 9 p.m. on MuchMusic. The star-gazing begins with the “Red Carpet Arrivals Special” at 8 p.m. ET. The celebrity-spotting continues with the “MMVAs AfterMath” at 11 p.m.

“We have quite a few big acts this year. It could be one of the most memorable shows,” says MuchMusic VJ Matte Babel.

The most nominated artists include Hedley, Belly, illScarlett and Simple Plan.

Best Video award nominees include Feist’s “1234,” Belly featuring Mario Winans in “Ridin,” Hedley’s “For the Nights I Can’t Remember,” illScarlett’s “Nothing Special” and Simple Plan’s “When I’m Gone.”

Hot celebrity presenters also pump up the star power. Gossip blog king Perez Hilton will be on hand to dole out MMVA honours. Other presenters include Spice Girl Melanie C, Sam Roberts, “Gossip Girl’s” Chace Crawford, Sum 41, “The Office’s” Rainn Wilson and “The Hills” stars Brody Jenner and Whitney Port.

“It’s going to be a real mix of big, established acts and hot up-and-comers,” says Babel. “Rihanna is a huge star and has been touring with Kanye West, one of the greatest performers in the world. I’m sure she’s picked up a thing or two from him and will put on a great show.”

He said, ‘She’s going to love this because she loves hearts.’ ” Rihanna, 20, was so impressed with her sparkling gift that she has ordered a diamond-encrusted cross for 19-year-old Chris from the same jewellers. Jason added to America’s OK! magazine: “Rihanna gave specific instructions about Chris’ gift. She was very particular about wanting the cross to match his other jewellery.

Rihanna was first linked to Chris in February after he attended her 20th birthday. Later that month, the pair enjoyed a romantic holiday in Jamaica and could barely keep their hands off each other while cooling off in a pool. They are also believed to have got matching star tattoos on their necks during their break. Rihanna has previously denied she is dating Chris, insisting he is like a brother to her. She said: “We are best friends, honestly, like brother and sister. I won’t say that we’re just friends - me and Chris are really best, best friends.”
Chris also claimed he has no interest in pursuing a relationship with Rihanna, saying: “People keep asking me, ‘What’s the deal?’ I’m like, ‘There’s no deal. No deal.’ We’re just friends.”

Rihanna has maintained her hold on the UK singles chart, scoring a second week at number one with ‘Take A Bow’.

Rihanna says she has a “good bull detector.” She is plagued by people trying to befriend her because she is famous, but finds it easy to distinguish between the fakes and her real friends.

She said: “I have a good bull detector so I’m very good at figuring out who is real and which people want to be my friend because of what I am versus who I am.” She copes with her hectic lifestyle by surrounding herself with her best friends.

She said: “I keep good people around me. My best friends are always there for me. They’re honest and they keep me in check.” Rihanna also revealed she thinks women should not get too obsessed with finding love, and thinks it’s more important to find happiness alone. She added to Top of the Pops magazine: “You shouldn’t depend on a guy to make your life better or good at all.”

Rihanna admits she enjoys spicing up her sex life by wearing her often revealing and provocative costumes at home.

She said: “I like to push the envelope sometimes. It depends on the mood and the occasion. It’s always fun to take some home. Sometimes I get to do that.”

The singer also revealed she is a big fan of the British music scene, and particularly loves Mark Ronson, Duffy and Estelle.

She added to Britain’s The Sun newspaper: “I think the UK is taking over. I’d love to work with Mark Ronson. And I really, really like Duffy. She is beautiful, her little dimples and her music. I also like Estelle. She has an incredible voice. But Duffy has more of an edge.”

Rihanna has credited her short hairdo for distinguishing her from other pop stars, and also for allowing her to discover herself.

She went against the wishes of her record label last year (07) when she did away with her long hair in favour of an edgy pixie cut, to coincide with the release of her album Good Girl Gone Bad.

Another plus which she insists the short hairdo has brought about, is that the change in style helped her establish her independence.

“I felt like the whole world had long, curly, flowy blonde hair. Ciara, Beyonce, Mariah, Christina Milian, Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

Everybody wanted to be like everybody else. So I cut my hair and they (Def Jam) made me put my long hair back in (as extensions).

“The second time, I didn’t have any discussions, nothing. I just cut it, I dyed it black, I went into the studio making music my way.

I found myself all at once. I like things strong, edgy, a little to the left. I don’t like things that are expected - nothing cliched,” she added.

After record breaking success with her latest album “Good Girl Gone Bad,” Rihanna has plans to take on the film industry this year. She is set to make her big screen debut in Mama Black Widow — the story of a black family’s migration from the South in the 1930s. The “Take a Bow” singer joins Kerry Washington, Anthony Anderson, Mos Def and Macy Gray in the film, currently in pre-production.

After conquering the music game, including this week’s near-record-breaking jump on Billboard’s Hot 100 (“Take A Bow” jumped 53-1), Rihanna says acting is on her mind adding “ I don’t know how good I’ll be at it, but it’s something that I want to try.”

Rihanna is all set to make pop chart history in America on Thursday (15May08) when she becomes the female artist with the biggest jump to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her “Take a Bow” is expected to rocket to the top of the singles chart from a lowly 53, thanks to a whopping 267,000 digital download sales.
The song’s jump is the second-best leap to the top, trailing only Rihanna’s duet partners Maroon 5 who scored a number one with Makes Me Wonder a year ago (May08) after a 63-position hike from 64.
Rihanna’s collaboration with Maroon 5 on If I Never See Your Face Again is expected to be one of the new charts highest debuts when the official countdown is released.
