Word on the street has it that Chris Brown is doing everything he can to get back into Rihanna’s good graces after the incident on February 8.

Rihanna, who turned 21 on February 20, is said to have received a diamond necklace and a phone call from Brown who has apparently been begging for forgiveness. So far, the two have not seen each other since the incident, and will come face to face March 5 in court.

The New York Post reports that Rihanna was scheduled to perform at last night’s Academy Awards show, but pulled out because of the recent incident with Chris.

According to the paper, Rihanna had been slated to do a surprise performance that would have put her in the company of Beyonce Knowles, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who performed at last night’s ceremony.

Since the incident, which occurred in the early-morning hours prior to the Grammys, Rihanna has been forced to pull out of several engagements, including scheduled concerts in Jakarta and Malaysia. Her 21st birthday, which occurred on Friday, also passed without fanfare, though the singer was spotted in Los Angeles the night before.

Police are currently investigating the incident, as well as the leak of a photo that purportedly shows the injuries Rihanna suffered.

Rihanna has broken her silence and issued a statement through her representatives, People reports. “At the request of the authorities, Rihanna is not commenting about the incident involving Chris Brown,” reads the statement. “She wants to assure her fans that she remains strong, is doing well, and deeply appreciates the outpouring of support she has received during this difficult time.”

Members of Rihanna’s family in her native Barbados thought Chris Brown “flew so far under everyone’s radar that we just didn’t think he was that [abusive] type,” a relative tells PEOPLE for its new cover story, on sale Friday. The turn of events comes as a shock to the family. “He was always looking after her needs,” says the relative, “making sure she was happy.”

But as far as her father, Ronald Fenty, is concerned, when it comes to Brown, his daughter should “move on.” A relative agrees: “I don’t want her to go back to him. I don’t think anyone does.”

Rihanna´s being all over the news lately — although for all the wrong reasons — has jacked up her album sales.

Sales of her 2007 disc “Good Girl Gone Bad” have jumped 31 percent this week.

The album sold an additional 25,000 copies in the U.S. which pushes it to number 21 on the charts.

Chris Brown isn’t having the same luck. His 2007 album, Exclusive, didn’t even reach the top 200.

Today’s news about this ongoing public peek into domestic violence is that Rihanna is “torn” about helping the cops because she still loves Chris. This is the classic line of a woman who is unconsciously programmed to come up with excuses for her man. And if, in fact, it’s not the first time he abused her, then Rihanna indeed is a victim of the myths that so many still believe.

The basic patriarchal myth throughout the Judeo-Christian-Muslim world is that “women are the root of all evil.” It leads to women having to cover their bodies — from wigs for Orthodox Jewish women to the veils of Muslim women and the long clothing of some Christian sects — as well as how they think about themselves and the treatment they get from men. Somehow, a woman who gets beaten like Rihanna “deserves” what she gets, since she must have done something bad to bring about that response. It’s a convenient myth for the patriarchal mindset that still rules much of the world.

That underlying myth is followed closely by “stand by your man, no matter what.” You love him, so you have to forgive him. His misbehavior was likely your fault. Take him back and pray it doesn’t happen again. After all, a woman is “nothing without a man.” It was just a year ago we watched Silda Spitzer stand mutely by her man, ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, as he sabotaged his career with a high-priced call girl. The pain on her face should be a warning to any woman who thinks she should go the same route.

Obviously, many teens today are a lot smarter. They’ve grown up with independent-thinking and acting mothers. They are appalled by what happened and the reaction against Chris Brown has been swift. But many others, who have commented on articles and blogs, insist it must have been Rihanna’s fault, so the myths still live.

All the facts have yet to come out, but it’s clear that Chris is as much a product of the beliefs he absorbed in childhood as is Rihanna. He now has a great opportunity–even a gift–of being able to find out at such a young age that this unconscious behavior doesn’t work and he needs to form his own value system.

A study done in 2005 showed that one out of every three teenagers knows a friend who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked, or physically hurt by their partner. Watching this domestic violence scenario play out in front of their eyes in the media can powerfully impact teens and young adults. If the pop princess straightens up and lets Brown fly right out the door, she is making a strong statement that love shouldn’t hurt like that and that women aren’t going to put up with that patriarchal cr*p any longer. And Chris can powerfully impact all the confused young men who might believe that women deserve to be slapped around now and again by admitting his mistake and making sure it never happens again.

Though Chris Brown was booked on a charge of criminal threats after allegedly beating his girlfriend, Rihanna, E! reports that the singer is being investigated for a multitude of other felonies:

At the request of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, the R&B star is being investigated for a variety of felonies, including domestic violence, assault resulting in great bodily injury and—based on specific allegations made by Rihanna—even attempted murder, a source close to the L.A. Police Department’s investigation tells E! News.

But as they build their case, the source says, prosecutors fear that making any serious felony charges stick could prove difficult in a case where there are no direct witnesses other than Rihanna and Brown.

Chris Brown says he is seeking counseling from loved ones and family members, one week after an alleged attack against Rihanna.
